From Randy, the Cherry Kuchem Recipe!

Sure I will participate.

I also have the cherry kuchen recipe as provided by Gma in a letter to Altha.

When you bake bread, break off a good size lump, add some butter and sugar and an egg. Mix well. Let stand and punch down. Let rise, then roll out and line your pie pans and let rise again. Just like you would your bread. In the meantime mix two rounded tablespoons flour with one cup sugar and stir into 2 cups milk and bring to a boil. When cool add 2 eggs well beaten and some sour cream.
Put cherries in raised pie pans. Pour milk concoction over the top and bake like you would bread. you taste and add if too thick of too sour , use your own judgment. Experience helps a lot. Good luck, my dears.

Altha has provided me with the additional information since the actual recipe is a bit vague.
Randy, some tips I have learned. This custard recipe will make two large 9" pies, The bread dough is a challenge to roll out. If you use frozen cherries be sure to thaw them and drain them first. If you use canned cherries be sure they are drained. Here is the measurements I have found works well for the custard.

2 rounded Tablespoons flour
1 Cup Sugar
2 Cups milk ( I use skim milk)
Mix and bring to boil then set to the side to cool.

2 eggs
1 cup sour cream (I use low fat)
Mix these two items together then add to the cooled milk mixture.

I use about 11/2 cups frozen (thawed) cherries for each pie, or 1 can of drained cherries for each pie.

I bake at 375 for 25 minutes with foil wrapped around the edges then I remove the foil and bake for another 30 minutes or until the custard just begins to brown. You have to watch it because it is easy to get the crust to dark. (be sure you put something under the pie pans because they often run over and make a real mess in the oven. again good luck.

Burkholder Reunion 2005

Yesterday I spent more time in the pool than taking pictures...so everyone else will have to share theirs from '08! Here are some of my favorites from '05!

Welcome to The Burkholder Blog!

This blog has been created with the intentions of connecting the Burkholder family in between reunions and with the capacity of family members to be able to contribute pictures and stories. Let's all give it a try!
